Expressionism

Expressionism is an art movement which began in 1905 and lasted till 1920.

This is an artistic style where the subjective emotions are highlighted. The high emotional quotient in the paintings resulted in exaggerated brushstrokes, distortion in subjects and fanatical elements. Although high visual intensity and boldness were observed in the art works, emotional aspects such as agony, frustration and anxiety were observed too. Some of the famous artworks of expressionism are:

Houses at night 1912 by Karl Schmidt Rottluff

The Scream 1893 by Edvard Munch

Street, Berlin 1913 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

Large blue horses 1911 by Franz Marc

Der Blaue Reiter 1903 by Wassily Kandinsky

Expressionism became an effective style in Germany, after which World War I happened. It was followed by Nueu Sachlichkeit. The high emotional quotients in expressionism has influenced some of the art movements.
